Robben Ford’s Blues Revolution

Robben Ford and TrueFire have recently teamed up to produce their Blues Revolution instructional course:

In this 6-hour, interactive video Blues Revolution course, Robben steps you through his Chicago blues influences, chord and scale vocabulary, rhythm guitar techniques, improvisational approaches and harmonic insight for crafting the fresh, contemporary lines that comprise his signature sound.

The course is divided into six sections:

1. Fundamentals
2. Chicago Blues
3. Chords and Comping
4. Scales and Applications
5. Soloing and Improvisation
6. Performances

I personally really enjoy Robben’s playing, so I’m happy to see him sharing his insights. TrueFire currently have a promotion running where you can save 10% off the course by using the offer code “REVOLUTION10″ if you decide to buy.

Here is an intro to the course:

Robben Ford – The Nashville Session Videos

After watching these videos of Robben Ford during his summer session here in Nashville recording with Michael McDonald, I realized two things: 1) I wish I could play guitar like Robben Ford, and 2) I wish I could sing like Michael McDonald. I can do neither, but I can at least enjoy watching them doing what they do best.

Robben Ford’s Guitar Dojo

Robben Ford has announced Robben Ford’s Guitar Dojo, which is a collection of instructional videos featuring Ford and Don Mock. In addition to the instructional videos, the site will feature soundcheck videos, streaming music, and a journal from Ford while he’s on the road. The videos are about $4.99-5.99 per lesson.

They just opened the virtual doors yesterday, so I imagine that they’ll be putting more content up there, but you can preview the videos that are currently uploaded. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I like what Ford is doing here; I wish more “famous” guitarists would do this kind of educational material.

Here’s Ford talking about the new site:

Robben Ford – The Art of Blues Rhythm

Robben Ford’s instructional DVD “The Art of Blues Rhythm” looks to be an excellent resource for learning how to play rhythm in a blues context. I haven’t seen the whole DVD yet, but the clips I’ve seen have all been interesting and informative. Here’s one clip I found on YouTube:

The Robben Ford Clinic: The Art of Blues Solos DVD

Robben Ford recently released a companion DVD to his Art of Blues Rhythm DVD. The new DVD is called The Art of Blues Solos.

Although I haven’t seen either DVD yet, I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Art of Blues Rhythm DVD. I’m also a fan of Ford’s phrasing, so I’m looking forward to watching him explain his soloing technique in the new DVD.

In the DVD, he talks about picking, theory, recording, and his influences. A printable PDF containing tab for the lessons is included with the DVD. There is almost two hours of instructional and live footage included with the DVD.

The DVD includes the following tracks:

  • Introduction
  • Developing Your Style
  • “Playin’ a Bit”
  • Basic Theory
  • “Cannonball Shuffle”
  • Techniques: Picking & Sliding
  • “In the Beginning”
  • Robben’s Early Jazz Influences
  • “Oasis”
  • Altered Scales
  • “Roger’s Blues”
  • Recording
  • Robben’s Equipment
