Daniel Donato: The New Master of the Telecaster: Pathways to Dynamic Solos

The joke here in Nashville is that there are more guitar players per capita than any other city. It may actually be true, but, regardless, the fact is there are tons of great guitar players here.

That’s why it’s really interesting when a newcomer gets noticed, as Daniel Donato has over the past couple of years. Donato is currently guitarist for the Don Kelley Band, which has previously featured Nashville aces Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Redd Volkaert, Guthrie Trapp, and JD Simo. I was able to catch a bit of Donato playing with Kelley last week, and he really is an excellent guitarist.

Hal Leonard recently took notice of Donato’s talent and has released an instruction book/DVD set titled Daniel Donato: The New Master of the Telecaster: Pathways to Dynamic Solos:

This exclusive instructional book and DVD set includes guitar lessons taught by young Nashville phenom Daniel Donato. The “New Master of the Telecaster” shows you his unique “pathways” concept, opening your mind and fingers to uninhibited fretboard freedom, increased music theory comprehension, and more dynamic solos! The DVD features Daniel Donato himself providing full-band performances and a full hour of guitar lessons, The book includes guitar tab for all the DVD lessons and performances. Topics covered include: using chromatic notes • application of bends • double stops • analyzing different styles • and more. DVD running time: 1 hr., 4 min.

The core of the instruction material is the DVD, with the book providing tabs and supporting information for what Donato discusses in the DVD.

The DVD is about an hour long and is dense with information. Donato basically takes the approach of trying to teach you the way he links the fretboard together. It’s an interesting concept that I haven’t seen laid out quite like he lays he out.

I don’t think this is an appropriate instruction book for beginners trying to get into country guitar, but it’s an interesting book for someone who is looking to expand their view of the fretboard.

You can purchase the book/DVD set directly from Hal Leonard, from Amazon, or your favorite book store.

Wow, this kid already has a book named after him. If you ever get a chance to go seem him down at Robert’s on Broadway, it’s worth it. He really is an incredible player.
