He's beyond fantastic. JAW-DROPPING is a serviceable term. Unbelievable tone that's entirely and inimitably from his fingers...that's where all the "effects" come from. This man is without question one of the elite Rock/Metal guitar players ever. And his blues is great as well (though when Gary plays blues, it almost always sounds like Hard Rock to me).
