Review: Sonny Landreth: Grant Street

Sonny Landreth: Grant Street

Sonny Landreth, a native of Louisiana, is one of the greatest slide guitar players of his generation and Grant Street is the album that finally demonstrates how great a live player he is. Sonny has created a technique all his own when it comes to elecrtic slide blues. Grant Street is primarily a driving blues album that includes many other music textures, including most prominently zydeco. The music on this CD is as intense as it is relaxed. Sonny and his band really seem to be in sync at this show and the music illustrates this. I’ve heard several of Sonny’s studio recordings, and I’d say that Grant Street really outshines all of them as far as his guitar playing is concerned. I’d definitely recommend picking up this album if you’re a fan of Sonny Landreth or if you’re into slide and blues music.

Guitar Shred Show

The Guitar Shred Show is an animated Web site by Mika Tyyska featuring a character named Mr. Fastfinger. You can watch Mr. Fastfinger jam or you can jam along with him. An interesting feature of the site is that in the lessons area, the tablature for the licks being played is displayed on the screen to help you follow along. The Guitar Shred Show is a very unique site worth checking out.
